Sewing leather

Quality of leather goods is determined by the quality of materials and quality of workmanship. Saddle Stitching offers top grade quality because in the process of stitching two needles are used and the thread is passed through each hole twice, doubling the strength in comparison to machine stitching.

Machine sewing of leather

Machine sewing has one great upside to hand stitching, the speed. Machine completes the task much faster than any person can. Because the thread goes only once through the leather, if the thread breaks at any point, the whole product could breakdown.

Hand sewing

Hand sewing demonstrates the mastery of the craftsman and looks much different than machine sewing. Saddle stitching is a type of sewing where two ends of the thread go through each hole crossing back and forth. The craftsman pays attention to every stitch and reacts to variations in leather.

Holes for hand sewing

Traditional tool for hand sewing is an awl that creates a diamond shaped hole. Also there are tools that have more teeth on them to make multiple holes at the same time with one hit of the hammer.

In both cases small holes are made in the leather. The size of the hole is determined by the needs of the product being made, thickness of the thread and the look the craftsman is going for.
